In addition to these websites, I recommend this workbook series to my students as a "painless" way to begin learning music theory.  There are three volumes:  Beginning Theory, Intermediate Theory and Advanced Theory,  and they are very non-threatening.  The three volumes stacked together measure less than three-eighths of an inch thick.  The price is non-threatening, too.  Each volume costs less than five dollars.
